Black History of Wickford
A walking tour with historian Tim Cranston
On Saturday, June 11, 30 LLC members joined, historian and tour guide, Tim Cranston for a walking tour in Wickford. Some of the most compelling stories of Wickford’s past include details about slavery, the Narragansett people, and freed blacks who came to this village before and after the Civil War.
Among the historic buildings along the walking tour route was the Domini Smith House.
As a slave during the American Revolution, Smith was a remarkable member of a crew on a fishing vessel owned by the prominent Baker family. Once freed, Domini Smith became a well-known member of the Wickford community and was able to have a house built for his family. The house is often referred to as the oldest home in Rhode Island built specifically for a black family.
Tim was excellent. Terrific event. Excellent theme and focus. Sidney Okashige
Learning about the Black History of that beautiful town was fascinating. Tim Cranston is a wonderful resource and so knowledgeable. Phil and I appreciate all the work and effort you put into arranging this walk and look forward to our next adventure with you. Phil and Celene Healy
Thank you for the wonderful Wickford experience this morning. Tim’s walk/talk was so well planned and informative. The human stories and the deeper insights into the events that shaped and are still impacting our world today were riveting to hear. Tim’s approach of retelling the historical events through the lens of the people who lived these experiences kept us grounded in realizing the human cost of our history. Very moving experience for us. With much appreciation, Bobbi & Joe Fisher

At the end of August, LLC Diversity and Cultural Events Committees will offer another summer walking tour in downtown Providence. This tour proposes to use a wide variety of public art and architecture to explore the themes of ethnic and cultural diversity and inclusion. A detailed announcement about this walking tour will be made later this summer.
Yesterday is History,
’Tis so far away—
Yesterday is Poetry—
’Tis Philosophy—
Yesterday is mystery—
Where it is Today
While we shrewdly speculate
Flutter both away

FROM THE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
What did you like about our courses?
Most of you have completed surveys at the end of LLC courses and have commented on what you like and what improvements may be needed. All this information is shared with the relevant course coordinators.
But what did other people say about courses that they took?
The results are interesting and helpful, and the comments are especially enlightening. Over the next few months, we'll share some of those comments with you. We begin with the responses from those who recently took the “Get Fit at Home” course.
I liked the personality and Professionalism of the Instructor, his expertise, demonstrations and good-natured encouragement.
Adam does something different for each class, so the class includes exercises we've done before as well as new ones. He always does a fabulous job of accommodating the limitations of class members, yet the class is an excellent workout. Adam seems very well trained and very thoughtful about his classes. I look forward to the class each week.
I really enjoyed this class! I like the way Adam teaches – explaining what muscles/areas we are working, demonstrating form, providing accommodations, and assessing each of us individually. It has been so helpful for my fitness goals. Adam's program helps with strengthening, balance, stamina, cardio, posture, and overall fitness. This class has been great for me and helps to keep me more accountable!
This course met me where I am, exercise-wise, and helped me to make improvements! I still marvel at the diversity of routines that Adam Stone came up with, and his willingness to adapt to our individual needs. I loved that Sam sent the videos of Adam to us so that I could practice in between classes, and when I needed to miss any class.
So register for this and other great courses this fall – adventure, improvement, and friendship await!
