PRIMO
October 22, 2005
Have you ever felt the call
of Auschwitz ---
that black hole in the heart
of the last century?
Does it pull you back
into its despair?
It is an empty place
casting a shabby shadow.
There I meet Primo Levi
one steamy summer day.
He tells me everything
about vanished humanity.
I am stripped naked like him ---
a guilt-ridden survivor.
His words quietly immobilize
then incinerate me in shame.
I am free to float up those stacks
embracing the spirits huddled above.
